Admissions to Doctorate Program


Admissions Requirements

Applicants to the Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program must meet the following conditions:
  1. The applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from an ACAOM accredited institution, an ACAOM candidate institution, or its equivalent.
  2. All pre-admission courses must be completed with not less than a 2.5 cumulative grade
    point average on a 4.0 scale.
  3. International students must have course work that has been verified by an education evaluation service for equivalency to the SBU master’s program. If the prerequisite educational requirements were earned at a recognized and approved foreign educational institution, prospective student’s official transcript must be evaluated by an agency which is a charter member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) with a copy of the evaluation forwarded directly to the SBU Admissions Office.

The applicant must possess a California acupuncture license before entering the doctoral
clerkship training.

Admissions Procedure

Applicants must meet the above mentioned requirements and complete the following procedures and must submit:

  1. A SBU Application Form with Applicant's Signature (Download Application form)
  2. A non-refundable $100 Application fee (sent with the Application Form)
  3. Official transcripts from all colleges attended sent directly to
    the Admissions Office at South Baylo University

  4. Two letters of recommendation. (Download Recommendation form-English)
  5. A Resume that includes educational background, professional and work experience, research and publications, and any information of significance.
  6. A personal essay
  7. Additional docuemts are required for international students. (See for details)


All completed applications are reviewed by the Doctoral Admissions Committee. This committee consists of Doctoral Academic Dean, one Faculty member, and Doctoral Admissions officer.

The applicant must possess a California acupuncture license before entering the doctoral
clerkship training.

All applications and supporting documents submitted to and received by the University shall become its property.

English Language Requirements

English language competency and proficiency will be required of all students seeking admission
to the SBU English doctoral program.

For admission to the English language doctoral program, students who are from non-English
speaking countries are required to provide evidence of a TOEFL exam with a minimum score
of 550(PBT), or 213(CBT), or 79(iBT).

Prior to entering the clerkship training for students in Korean or Chinese language programs,
a minimum TOEFL score of 500(PBT), or 173(CBT), or 61(iBT), and a TSE score of 45
is required.

For students who have completed two years (a minimum of 60 semester or 90 quarter credits)
of higher education in an accredited institution in the US or an equivalent educational
institution in another country that teaches in the English language, the English proficiency
requirements may be waived.

Conditional Admissions

At the discretion of South Baylo University, applicants may be admitted conditionally
under one of the following conditions:

Applicants who have declared in writing and demonstrated sufficient evidence that they
possess the necessary qualifications for “Full Admission” status but have not yet provided
all of the necessary documentation may be conditionally admitted. Such students will
have only one quarter to provide the necessary documentation and enroll in South Baylo
University at their own risk. If that documentation, when received, does not qualify them
for Full Admission, they must leave the program and reapply for admission once the necessary
requirements have been met. Students not supplying South Baylo University with
that information within one quarter will not be allowed to continue in the program until
the above information has been received by the Doctoral Admissions Office.

Special Admissions

At the discretion of South Baylo University, an applicant may be admitted as a Special
student under one of the following conditions:

  1. Applicants who have graduated from an ACAOM accredited institution or its equivalent
    but lack certain prerequisites for courses at the doctoral level are admitted as Special
    students, and are required to meet all prerequisites during the first year.

  2. Applicants who are experienced licensed acupuncture practitioners who do not meet
    the educational/course requirements may be admitted to the program as Special students under the following conditions:

    • A review of their training and experience by the Doctoral Admissions Committee indicating that they have a strong foundational basis in Oriental Medicine, enough to be an appropriate candidate for admission.
    • Submission of five (5) years minimum documented full time clinical practice in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
    • Completion of specific courses or Challenge Examinations in areas of deficiencies prior to beginning doctoral level courses. All such courses or Challenge Examinations must be completed within the first year from the start of the program.

Apply to DAOM program

For admission to DAOM program, an applicant must meet the preliminary admission requirements. The following items are required to process an application for admission:

  1. A SBU Application Form with Applicant's Signature (Download Application form)

    the Admissions Office at South Baylo University

  5. A Resume that includes educational background, professional and work experience, research and publications, and any information of significance.
  6. A personal essay

International students who need an I-20 form must apply for admission as a full-time student.  In addition to the above six items, the following items are needed to process an application for admission:

    7.The student must complete and submit the  I-20 Request Form (Download Request form)

    8. If foreign students who are from non-English speaking countries want to enroll into the English language program, scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) are required. The minimum scores of 550 on the paper test, 213 on the computer test or 79 on the internet-based test. For students who have completed two years (60 semester or 90 quarter credits) of baccalaureate level education in an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the US Department of Education or an equivalent educational institution in another country that teaches in the English language, the English proficiency requirement may be waived.

    9. Students with previous coursework from universities abroad, must have those courses evaluated by an agency which is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).  Comprehensive Course-by-Course evaluations must be sent directly from the credit evaluation agency to the SBU Admissions Office for admission determination. The evaluation fee is $200 which is non-refundable

    10. All foreign students must submit official documentation from banks and employers to show financial resources to meet all their educational costs to attend a university in the US.

    11. A non-refundable $20 Mailing Fee (for I-20 to be mailed out)

    12. Upon receipt of the I-20 form, students must pay a US immigration SEVIS fee of USD$200 (I-901 fee) before the interview at the US Embassy for the student visa.  Further information can be found at www.uscis.gov
