Course Description of Certificate Program
This is a sequence of classes covering Anatomy & Physiology of the human body systems, in particularly of the integumentary system. These classes will provide students with a basic foundational knowledge of bodily structures and functions that are needed and the background information to become a competent licensed Massage Technician.
This is a sequence of classes to provide the students with massage theories, therapeutic applications, contraindications and necessary psycho-motor skills training and dexterity to perform massage techniques. Supervised practical training periods will be used to train the students to be effective in the basic Swedish Massage techniques (strokes) which include effleurage, petrissage, friction, percussion, and kneading. Students will be required to demonstrate competency in psycho-motor skills by practicing on each other and eventually will be assessed for learned skills by providing full Swedish massage sessions on licensed supervisors.
This course covers Energy flow through the 14 Meridians of the human body. Students will be able to identify Acupressure points of the body and perform Acupressure and tuina. These unique massage techniques originated in Asian and are effective in pain control.
This course provides students with a basic understanding of public health, communicable diseases and their official reporting and prevention. Preventive procedures will be discussed with students to educate them in the potential spreading of pathogens, communicable skin diseases and various types of body fluids borne pathogens. Basic hygiene at the working place and hand washing procedures are fully emphasized to prevent cross contamination and maintenance of a clean environment for the comfort of clients.
This class is essential to all forms of deep tissue therapy and as it focuses on bodily biomechanics, joint structures, articular movements, joint plays and homeostatic imbalances, and muscle isotonic and isometric contractions. Group muscles and individual muscle actions on articulation(s) will be presented in details to include isometric and isotonic contractions, ranges of motions, joint end fields, antagonist actions, muscle tonicity and muscle synergistic activities. Common joint dysfunctions will also be presented to the students.
This course explores nutritional needs of the body and basic concepts of healthy eating including food combining, vegetarianism, and common food disorders of modern society. Basic food components, food pyramid and the common diets (Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet, Zone Diet, Ornish Diet, Weight Watchers, Raw Diet, Vegan Diet, and Vegetarian Diet) will be presented. Obesity, weight loss and gain, and abnormal body conditions will also be discussed.
This course covers all the Reflexology points of the foot that have been correlated to body organs. Students will be trained in Acupressure techniques and their psycho-motor skills to perform them on the feet and legs will be assessed for competency practical training sessions.
This course provides the student with skills to apply massage oils on the patient’s skin to enhance beneficiary sensory and autonomic nervous system responses. Smell and aroma are the main focus in this course to relieve various pain conditions through the sensory nervous pathways.
This course provides an increased awareness of the important role ethics plats in the Massage profession. Business ethics, clients files and information confidentiality, professional conduct, sexual misconducts and misrepresentations, and ethical dilemmas will be presented with basic professional codes of Massage Therapy practice.
Supervised clinical training practice will be conducted to allow students to enhance their performance. Various massage techniques such as Acupressure, Tuina Massage, Swedish Massage, Rolfing, Reflexology, and Trigger Point learned in the classroom will be conducted and performance assessed through a Clinical Training Program. Students will be required to provide clients massage sessions under the supervision of licensed health practioners.
The University regularly conducts educational seminars on specific massage techniques, business practice and other relevant subjects to enhance the learning of students.
Tuition and Fees The University charges a basic tuition of $5.00 per instructional hour. Students enrolled in the clinical training phase to provide massage therapy to clients will be required to pay a malpractice fee of $50.00 per quarter. [ TOP ] |
