Doctoral Degree Program Requirements Total: 105 Units or 1380 Hours
*Doctoral Students must be licensed to practice in the State of California prior to clinical clerkship training.
Doctoral Program Goals and Competencies
In alignment with SBU’s mission statement,
the following objectives were
designed to achieve program goals and
competencies. Graduates of the DAOM
program at SBU will be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of patient assessment and diagnosis
Upon graduation, doctoral students will be able to demonstrate deepened and broadened knowledge of:
a. Interpretation of classical texts of AOM of patient assessment and diagnosis;
b. Integration of both Biomedical Medical diagnosis;
c. Patient assessment and diagnostic skills of various medical conditions that are commonly
seen in AOM clinical practice.
- Demonstrate ability to perform advanced clinical intervention and treatment.
Upon graduation, doctoral students will be able to:
a. Apply advanced patient assessment and diagnostic skills for clinical intervention
and treatment;
b. Implement advanced and special AOM therapeutic modalities for effective clinical
treatment;
c. Formulate appropriate management strategies for patients with medical conditions
commonly seen in AOM clinical practice.
- Demonstrate consultative and collaborative skills and knowledge when interacting with
other health care providers in case management.
Upon graduation, doctoral students will be able to;
a. Obtain adequate knowledge of general biomedicine.
b. Communicate effectively with other health care providers.
- Demonstrate expertise in selected specialty(s).
Upon graduation, doctoral students will be able to implement expertise, knowledge, and
skills in at least one area of a specialty.
- Demonstrate ability to conduct clinical research.
Upon graduation, doctoral students will be able to:
a. Understand the scientific research design and methodology of clinical inquiry;
b. Conduct critical analysis of the scientific clinical literature and apply findings to
clinical practice;
c. Design, implement, and conduct research in an area of interest utilizing academic form
and style; meeting standards suitable for peer-reviewed professional publications;
d. Present and/or publish research findings to professional colleagues, the public, and
/ or in journals.
- Demonstrate commitment to the profession.
Upon graduation, doctoral students will be able to:
a. Demonstrate clinical supervision, teaching, and management knowledge and
skills;
b. Promote personal well-being and the well-being of patients;
c. Independently seek new knowledge and build a lifelong professional learning behavior.
d. Utilize information technologies to analyze, manage and enhance Acupuncture and
Oriental Medicine treatment procedures for optimum health care service.
