Download the SBU Financial Aid Guideline

The purpose of Financial Aid is to assist students in paying for educational costs. The Financial Aid Office is available to help students secure funds through a variety of aid programs available to assist students to pay for their education.

These aid programs include grant, loan, scholarship, and work-study program. Grants and scholarships are financial awards the student does not need to pay back. Loans are borrowed funds students must repay. The Work-study program is an opportunity to earn money to pay for part of the student's educational expenses.

Upon enrolling in the University, students may be eligible to apply for the following types of Financial Aid programs: Federal Pell Grant (PELL), Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Federal Stafford Loan (Stafford), Federal Work Study (FW-S), Federal Plus Loan (PLUS), Federal Unsubsidized Loan, and CAL State Grants.

Students must maintain a satisfactory academic record in order to remain eligible for Financial Aid. More detailed information can be found in the Financial Aid Handbook. Check with the Financial Aid Officer for such information before you enroll. No financial aid is available for academic work beyond the University's requirements for graduation.

The amount of financial aid a student is entitled to receive depends on financial need. Financial need is the difference between the cost of education and the student's expected family contribution (EFC) as determined by the formula established by the Department of Education. Costs include tuition, non-refundable fees, books, supplies, room and board. The sum of these costs constitutes the educational budget.

Financial Aid

SBU participates in federal financial aid programs, including federal grants, loans and work-study. Federal financial aid is available to students enrolled in the MSAOM.

Students who have been accepted at SBU may apply for federal financial aid. This requires filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). These forms can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office or on the internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students must file a new FAFSA every year. Eligibility for financial aid is determined by using a federal formula outlined by the U.S. Department of Education .

Federal Pell Grant

The Pell Grant is a federally funded program and does not have to be repaid. It is available to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

FSEOG is a federally funded program and does not have to be repaid. It is available to undergraduate students with exceptional need

Federal Work-Study (FWS)

Provides jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing students to earn money to help pay for education expenses.

Federal Family Education Loan Programs (FFELP)

Federal Stafford Loans must be repaid with interest. Federal Stafford loans can be subsidized or unsubsidized:

Subsidized Stafford Loans
are awarded based on demonstrated financial need. The federal government pays the interest while the student is in school and during grace period (six months after the students has completed the program or drops below half-time enrollment); as well as during the deferment period.

Unsubsidized Stafford Loans
are for all eligible students regardless of financial need. The student is responsible for paying all the interest on the loan, but can allow it to accumulate while in school and during the grace and deferment periods.

How is financial aid determined?

Financial aid is based on demonstrated financial need. This is determined by taking the Cost of Attendance (COA) at SBU and subtracting the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC is generated by the information reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and is verified by a federal income tax return and/or agencies providing non-taxable income.
