Admissions Requirements

Applicants to the Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program must meet the following conditions:
  1. The applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in Acupuncture or Oriental Medicine from an ACAOM accredited institution, an ACAOM candidate institution or its equivalent.
  2. All pre-admission courses must be completed with not less than a 2.5 cumulative grade point average.

If the prerequisite educational requirements were earned at recognized and approved foreign educational institutions, prospective student's official transcript must be evaluated by International Education Research Foundation, Inc. (IERF), Credential Evaluation, P.O. Box 66940, Los Angeles, California 90066 or World Education Services (WES), P.O. Box 5087, Bowling Green Station, New York, NY 10274-5087 or another recognized agency which is a charter member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation serves (NACES) with a copy of the evaluation forwarded directly to the SBU Doctoral Admissions Office.

The prospective student should show evidence of maturity and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a primary health care professional

Admissions Procedure

For admission to South Baylo University, applicants must meet the admission requirements that were listed in the "Admission Requirements" section above. The procedural items are required to be completed so that an admissions decision can be rendered. Please submit:
  1. A properly completed SBU Application Form with a non-refundable $100 Application fee.
  2. Official transcripts from all colleges attended sent directly to the Doctoral Admissions Office at South Baylo University (1126 N. Brookhurst St Anaheim, CA 92801).
  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. A Resume that includes educational background, professional and work experience, research and publications, and any information of significance.
  5. A personal essay

All completed applications are reviewed by the Doctoral Admissions Committee. This committee consists of Doctoral Academic Dean, one Faculty member, and Doctoral Admissions officer.

A Personal interview with the Doctoral Admissions Committee will be scheduled as soon as his/her application is completed.

All applications and supporting documents submitted to and received by the University shall become its property.

English Language Requirements

Foreign students who are from non-English speaking countries are required to provide evidence of a TOEFL exam with a minimum score of 550 for the English language doctoral program. The TOEFL score of 500 is required for Korean and Chinese language programs prior to entering the clerkship training. For students who have completed two years (60 semester or 90 quarter credits) of higher education in an accredited institution in the US or an equivalent educational institution in another country that teaches in the English language, the English proficiency requirements may be waived.

Conditional Admissions

At the discretion of South Baylo University, applicants may be admitted conditionally under one of the following conditions:

Applicants who have declared in writing and demonstrated sufficient evidence that they possess the necessary qualifications for "Full Admission" status but have not yet provided all of the necessary documentation may be conditionally admitted. Such students will have only one quarter to provide the necessary documentation and enroll in South Baylo University at their own risk. If that documentation, when received, does not qualify them for Full Admission, they must leave the program and reapply for admission once the necessary requirements have been met. Students not supplying South Baylo University with that information within one quarter will not be allowed to continue in the program until the above information has been received by the Doctoral Admissions Office.

Special Admissions

At the discretion of South Baylo University, applicants may be admitted as a Special student under one of the following conditions:
  1. Applicants who have graduated from an ACAOM accredited institution or its equivalent but who lacks certain prerequisites for courses at the doctoral level are admitted as a Special student and are required to meet all prerequisites during the first year.
  2. Applicants who are experienced licensed acupuncture practitioners who do not meet the educational/course requirements may be admitted into the program as a Special student under the following condition:
    • A review of their training and experience by the Doctoral Admissions Committee indicating that they have a strong foundational basis in Oriental Medicine, enough to be an appropriate candidate for admission.
    • Submission of a minimum of documented five (5) years of full time clinical practice in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
    • Completion of specific courses or Challenge Examinations in areas of deficiencies prior to beginning doctoral level courses. All such courses or Challenge Examinations must be completed within the first year from the start of the program.
